Hello! :)

Welcome to my website! I'm so happy you're here! I am Dr. Michelle Gaines (she/her), and I am an autistic counseling psychologist, and I specialize in providing therapy for autistic & ADHD adults. I have over 45 years of lived experience as a late-diagnosed autistic person myself, in addition to specialized training and experience in providing care for neurodivergent folks. I also have close family members & friends who are neurodivergent, which has taught me a lot about the beauty of the variation within and between neurotypes. Click here to learn more about the importance of shared neurodivergent status or autistic-to-autistic communication. Let's talk. I would love to help support you!

My Story

I have been a psychologist for over 15 years. My overall style is warm, gentle, encouraging, and reflective. Therapy is individualized to the client. I aim to accommodate each client's needs and preferences, and I focus on strengths. I am secular/non-religious in approach and LGBTQ+ affirming. My methods are collaborative and affirmative, and I have an eclectic approach drawing from many areas as needed, with an emphasis on client-centered/humanistic methods and third-wave cognitive behavioral approaches that emphasize mindfulness (ACT, DBT).

Prior to discovering my own neurodivergence, I had extensive experience in providing therapy and psychological assessment for a wide range of diagnoses in diverse populations. â€‹I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Texas Tech University in 2009, before I knew I was autistic myself. I completed my predoctoral internship at the US Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri. I hold licenses to practice psychology in both Alabama and Texas, and I'm credentialled by the PSYPACT commission to practice virtually via telehealth in any PSYPACT state. I also have several years of experience teaching college courses in Psychology including General, Health, Abnormal, and Developmental Psychology. I also worked for several years for Texas Tech Health Sciences Center CMHC, first as a student, then as a Psychologist, and later serving as the Senior Director for Psychological Services for approximately half the state of Texas.

Within the past several years, after discovering my own neurodivergence, I decided to shift my focus to specialize in autism and ADHD. Discovering that I was neurodivergent after a lifetime of masking has led to a passion for helping other neurodivergent individuals gain a stronger understanding of themselves through diagnostic evaluation and therapy. I find it immensely rewarding to be able to help other Neurodivergents recognize their strengths and better navigate the challenges of living in a world not designed for them, so that they can reach their personally chosen life goals.

Prior to starting this practice, I worked for Prosper Health, the country's biggest online provider of adult autism diagnostic assessments and therapy. I served as a medical reviewer for Prosper Health's blog (see some helpful and informative articles I reviewed for them here), served on their clinician advisory board, was their interim chair of their IRB, and received numerous positive reviews from patients, who described me as caring, kind, patient, knowledgeable, thorough, easy to talk to, responsive, and skilled at creating a safe space for them to express themselves. I look forward to seeing you!
