Neurodiversity-Affirming Counseling Tailored to Autistic & ADHD Adults
Dr. Gaines provides neurodiversity-affirming counseling services focused on helping Autistic & ADHD clients build on their strengths to create more fulfilling, comfortable lives on their own terms. Therapy can be conducted in person and, in most cases, virtually (clients must be in Alabama or one of the many PSYPACT states during virtual/telehealth sessions).

Help with Common Life Challenges
Though being Autistic and/or ADHD may come with significant advantages in some areas, navigating a world that is not designed for your neurotype can be challenging. I offer counseling that is specifically tailored to autistic & ADHD patients who need additional support while going through difficulties such as stress, relationship difficulties, trouble coping at work or school, grief, health and aging issues, anxiety, depression, and a variety of other challenges. While these types of challenges are common in individuals of all neurotypes, being Autistic and/or ADHD in a neurotypical world adds an additional layer that can both affect and be affected by these difficulties. In addition to my training, I also make use of my life experience in therapy, which gives me perspective and a strong ability to connect with neurodivergent individuals.

Support for Needs Specific to Autism & ADHD
Autistics & ADHDers may also choose to seek support in areas that are directly related to their neurotype, such as not readily being understood, appreciated, and accepted by nonautistic or nonADHD people, reframing their past experiences after late-life diagnosis, and learning to unmask and be more comfortable with their authentic selves. Other areas that Autistic & ADHD adults sometimes choose to seek support with can include regulating/identifying/expressing emotions, meeting sensory and stimming needs, and allowing for needed periods of hyperfocus on specialties/passions and flow while still remaining motivated to meet their other life goals, planning and organization, burnout, and advocating for their needs. Having a therapist who is knowledgeable about neurodivergence is very important when seeking support in these areas.
Flexible, Caring, Client-Centered Approach
My approach to therapy is founded upon the client choosing their own goals for therapy, rather than having goals imposed upon them. I primarily use a mix of client-centered, cognitive, and mindfulness techniques, though I can also be flexible and adaptive to the client’s preferences in many ways. I offer warmth, acceptance, patience, and a caring ear while also gently encouraging clients to make strides toward their chosen goals.

Accommodations Available
Therapy occurs in a comfortable, low-stimulation environment. Adjustments can be made to accommodate varied sensory or communication needs. Feel free to bring any sensory, comfort, or stimming items, drinks, or snacks that you may need to make your session more comfortable. Don’t hesitate to ask for changes in the lighting, different seating options, or white noise if it makes you more comfortable.
